Shrimp diseases continue to be one of the major constraints to sustainable aquaculture, causing significant economic losses worldwide despite continuous advances in diagnostics, nutrition, genetics, and health management. While considerable research has focused on individual pathogens and specific intervention strategies, successful disease control at commercial scale requires an integrated management approach that combines prevention, early detection, and continuous optimization of farming practices.
This presentation summarizes ShrimpVet's practical experience in developing and implementing integrated shrimp health management strategies through our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Demonstration Farm, a 30-ha commercial shrimp farming operation located in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Serving as a real-world innovation platform, the ESG Farm enables new technologies, management practices, and health solutions to be validated under commercial production conditions before their wider industry adoption.
Drawing upon extensive field experience, the presentation will discuss the key pillars of commercial shrimp disease management, including biosecurity implementation, water quality control, nutritional optimization, health surveillance, disease diagnostics, microbial management, and rapid response strategies during disease outbreaks. Rather than addressing individual pathogens in isolation, emphasis will be placed on strengthening shrimp robustness through integrated farm management that minimizes production risk and improves system resilience.
Several commercial case studies will demonstrate how data-driven decision-making, continuous farm monitoring, and multidisciplinary management can effectively reduce disease incidence while improving survival, productivity, and production consistency. Practical examples will also illustrate how innovation can be successfully translated from research into scalable commercial farming solutions.
The experiences presented provide a practical framework for shrimp producers, veterinarians, researchers, and aquaculture professionals seeking sustainable and commercially applicable strategies for disease prevention and health management.
