Light management is a key factor in controlling sexual maturation in farmed Atlantic cod, yet conventional approaches based on continuous artificial illumination are being challenged by emerging production strategies. This session presents results from submerged cage systems, where fish are held at greater depths with naturally reduced light intensity. The findings indicate that it is possible to maintain low levels of maturation without relying on high artificial light exposure, suggesting a more energy-efficient production regime. The presentation will highlight recent data on growth performance, maturation control, and operational considerations when combining deep farming with targeted light management. Ode is currently the only cod farming company in the world operating submerged cage systems and is now observing highly promising results from this approach. The presentation will also introduce a novel solution designed to provide even greater control and increased production capacity.
