5 Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, & Earth Science, University of Miami, Miami, FL USA The new Cooperative Institute Fostering Aquaculture Research and Marketing (CIFARM) was recently established in the US to expand seafood production and markets throughout the U.S. by developing aquaculture in territorial seas and the Exclusive Economic Zone, thereby enhancing coastal economies and supporting American maritime communities. The University of New Hampshire (UNH) was chosen as the lead institution by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Aquaculture (OAQ), along with Consortium members the University of Miami, University of Southern Mississippi, Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute, and the University of Hawai'i, with regional Sea Grant Programs. CIFARM will work closely with state, federal and industry partners to foster sustainable aquaculture across diverse U.S. regions by establishing a coordinated framework that leverages regional expertise, streamlines permitting processes, and promotes innovation and workforce development.

This initiative aligns with the NOAA Aquaculture Strategic Plan goals, which include managing sustainability and efficiency, leading with science, educating and exchanging information, and supporting economic viability and growth.

Each CIFARM Consortium member, strategically located across the Northeast, Southeast and Caribbean, Gulf of America, West Coast, and the Pacific Islands, is designed to embody excellence in state-of-the-art infrastructure, aquaculture science and commercial expertise, active partnerships with diverse stakeholders, and a proven record of innovation. These Consortium members will facilitate local yet cross-cutting projects that involve educational institutions, Sea Grant, NOAA assets, industry partners, non-governmental organizations, and local seafood businesses and communities, ensuring that region-specific plans for seafood product development, test bed facilities, and educational programs are consistent across the nation.
