As we lead up to our Aquaculture Europe 2023 event in Vienna in September, we have two feature articles on freshwater aquaculture, in the March issue of Aquaculture Europe, that underline the conference theme of “Balanced diversity in aquaculture development.” You can read the March issue HERE
Aquaculture is the world’s most diverse farming practice in terms of number of species, farming methods, intensity level and environ-ments used. Significant efforts have been made to promote species diversity since global aquaculture production is dominated by a few dozen species. The needs for responsible use of resources, improved efficiency and in-creased resilience against future challenges such as diseases and climate change require further diversification in aquaculture beyond species level.
However, diversification in aquaculture should be well balanced taking into account area specificities, available natural resources, social realities and needs of circular economy. Diversification should be appropriately main-tained for local conditions, market access and resilience. Balance between small- and large-scale aquaculture en-terprises and activities of various water users for example are salient issues in future aquaculture development.
Taking place in the iconic Austrian capital, Vienna, AE2023 will be a perfect meeting place for this focus on diversification, and while Austria has a low aquaculture produc-tion, it has plans for development of existing and new production methods and species and it is at the heart of central Europe, adjacent to Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Italy and other European countries focussing on aquaculture development.
Diversification is of course also especially relevant to the marine sector and the AE2023 parallel sessions will cover the full scope of European aquaculture scientific disci-plines and species and will comprise submitted oral and poster presentations. AE2023 will also feature an inter-national trade exhibition, industry forum, student sessions and activities, satellite workshops and updates on EU research.

He is the coordinator of the AquaIMPACT EU-project that develops genomic and nutritional applications for the aquaculture industry of the 4 main farmed fish species in EU.
Morten Rye has 35 years of experience in genetic research and large-scale selective breeding programs for 20 aquaculture species worldwide, including the majority of those farmed in Europe. He earned his PhD in Animal Breeding from the Agricultural University of Norway in 1992 and has (co)authored more than 80 scientific papers and book chapters on genetics and selection. He is currently heading Benchmark Genetics’ External Services division.
Lissy is CEO of Aqua-Spark, an impact fund investing in innovative, novel solutions to some of aquaculture’s biggest challenges. Aqua-Spark focuses on investing in solutions across the whole supply chain creating sustainable production by using novel feed ingredients which can replace fishmeal, promoting fish health, finding alternatives for antibiotics, supporting companies and technologies that can improve farm practices, from feeders reducing feed waste to systems collecting data to optimize production, companies creating marketplaces and platforms increasing transparency in the supply chain.
Lissy has over two decades of banking experience mainly in food & agribusiness finance at Rabobank. She set-up the leveraged finance team in Asia and significantly grew the business in North America by working closely with investors to finance companies in the food and agricultural sector. After eight years working in Hong Kong, New York and London, Lissy returned to the Netherlands to lead Rabobank’s global lending business. While sitting on Rabobank’s Investment Committee Lissy first learned about Aqua-Spark and realized the real challenges and opportunities in aquaculture and the role capital can play to develop the perfect food system for the future.
There are no official AE2023 hotels. But there are plenty of accommodation options in Vienna. We therefore advise you to make your own search and selection.
There is a main Metro stop at the entrance of the Messe convention centre.
